Infiltration

In Part One, the plant “infiltrates” the vertical line of the wall post. I chose to study this corner of the wall because it presented an interesting contrast of straight and organic lines as well as industrial and natural shapes.
In Part Two, the flower “infiltrates” the power of the industrial setting by escaping it. The leftmost vertical line of papers presents a confusing scene: objects are cut off by the edge of the paper and the lines of the easel interrupt any remaining white space. As the diagonal pages progress downwards, I gradually eliminated the clutter in the scene to emphasize the organic shape of the flower and create rest for the eyes. As a result, viewers are drawn to the calm of nature, not the busyness of everyday life.
I completed this study using a blind contour style, avoiding looking at my page while drawing. I also jumped into the study without a preliminary sketch and added one page at a time to the composition, forcing me to be purposeful with my mark-making and composition.
